PROJECT OVERVIEW

You are going to begin a research project that will cover the four major steps of statistical analysis:

1. Research objective – Identify your question of interest and your population of interest
2. Data collection – Identify your sample and collect data from that sample
3. Descriptive statistics – Describe the data you collected in your sample through graphical and numerical summaries
4. Inferential statistics – Answer the research question of interest by drawing a conclusion about the population through the data collected in the sample

The Goal: Once you have your data, summarize that data through the use of descriptive statistics. This will involve visualizing your data through the use of a graph and computing summary statistics.

If you need help with the table feature in MS Word, or the graphing feature in MS Excel, please come see me - not at the last minute (bring your data with you on a flash drive and we can create the table and graph on my computer).

The Requirements: Part 3 Due ___________________________.
Report (Details below) must be compiled in this order:
1. Your write-up (detailed requirements below) of the project,
2. Your table and graph inserted into the report, and
3. Your data set as an appendix.

The Report: Your report must address the following components. There should be at least one paragraph for each component, but you may need more.

- Research Objective: Identify your question of interest and define your population of interest. Your question of interest must be about either a population mean (quantitative data) or a population proportion (qualitative data). Ask for help with this if you need it!

- Data Collection: Describe how you found your sample, why you believe it is random (or why it is not), and what population it represents (careful here – the data must represent your population of interest identified above). Provide a printed copy of the data and where you found your data.

- Data Summary: For the data you’ve found, identify the variable of interest. Then classify the variable as qualitative or quantitative.

- Frequency Table: Create a frequency table for your variable of interest, using the table feature of Microsoft Word to insert it directly into your report (no tables by hand or as a separate paper at the end of the report). If your variable is qualitative, then list the categories of that variable and the corresponding frequencies. If your variable is quantitative, you may need to first create intervals for the variable and then give the corresponding frequencies (this will depend on the range of the values of your variable). Write at least one sentence that summarizes what this table tells you about your variable.

- Graph: Create a graph to visually summarize your data, using the graph feature of Microsoft Excel (copy and paste the graph directly into your report; no tables by hand or separately at the end of the report). If your data is qualitative, create a bar graph to visualize your data set. If your data is quantitative, create a histogram to visualize your data set. Write at least one sentence that summarizes what this graph tells you about your variable.

- Summary Statistics: Numerically summarize your data set by computing summary statistics. If your data is qualitative, provide proportions for each category (i.e. relative frequencies for each category). If your data is quantitative, provide the mean and standard deviation for each sample.
