Procedure
- Collect a specimen of moss. Naturally occurring moss may be found in sheltered moist environments around the north side of a building, on a tree trunk, or on rocks near streams. Carefully remove one entire plant specimen, taking care to minimize damage to the remaining moss colony. Wrap the moss in a moist paper towel and store it in a plastic. (Spanish moss is NOT a moss; it is a Bromeliad in the same family as pineapples.)
- With the moss you collected, create a wet moss sample and a dry moss sample using the following procedures:
- To create a wet sample, dampen a few paper towels with tap water. Wrap one portion of moss in the moist paper towels and place it in a plastic bag overnight.
- To create a dry sample using collected natural moss, gently blot excess water from the moss with dry paper towels while keeping plant structures intact. Discard the paper towels and allow the moss to dry on fresh paper towels overnight.
- Once you are ready to begin, remove the wet moss from its baggie and place both the wet and dry moss samples on a work surface. Observe the texture and structure of the wet versus dry samples.
- Use a magnifying hand lens to explore the structure of the gametophytes of the moss.
- On a piece of paper, sketch and label the structure of the gametophyte as viewed with the magnifying hand lens.
- Take a photo of the sketch. Upload the image.
- Repeat steps 5-7, sketching the general structure of each plant part when viewed with the hand lens. Upload the images a total of 7 images.
Note: Sporangia may be "tangled" or hidden within other structures in the moss.
