DEVELOPMENT OF OWN TEACHING-LEARNING PHILOSOPHY 2
Personal Teaching-Learning Philosophy
Teaching others, whether learners are patients and their families, fellow staff nurses, or nursing students, has been a professional responsibility of healthcare workers. Teaching in healthcare is the process of attending to clients' needs, experiences, and intervening. Learning on the other hand, is the process of acquiring knowledge through experiences, studying, or teaching. Teaching and learning philosophies are important due to the modernization and continuing changes in healthcare. Professional healthcare workers need to acquire knowledge in teaching and learning approach in order to improve quality of care to their patients. This paper will elaborate my personal learning style and professional teaching philosophy. It will also elaborate on how my values and beliefs are related to teaching and learning as a professional healthcare provider.
Personal Learning Style
Learning style is an indicator of how a learner perceives, interact, and responds to the learning environment. "Learners are required to demonstrate systematic understanding, skills, and values pertinent to medical education and the underpinning principles of adult, self-directed learning" (Kay, Mohanna, 2007). There are different types of learning styles. Some of these types include: visual, auditory, verbal, physical, social, solitary, and logical. By knowing and understanding my own learning style will help improve the quality of my learning and teaching skills. My personal learning style involves visual and verbal. The visual style of learning is when the learner understands and retains information well when it is delivered through images. "When knowledge is visible, that task is far more easily accomplished" (Caviglioli, Harris, 2003). Using pictures, images, and colours helps me understand information more easily. Verbal style of learning involves written and spoken words. Explaining things, knowing the meaning of words, and using words to express myself helps me understand information well.
DEVELOPMENT OF OWN TEACHING-LEARNING PHILOSOPHY 3
Professional Teaching Philosophy
Teaching philosophy explains what one hope to achieve in teaching. A person whose learning style is verbal will do more reading, speaking, and listening, while a person whose learning style is visual will use more images, pictures, maps, and video to teach. My professional teaching philosophy will be more client-centred and visual activities. Since the learner is the main focus, I will teach in response to the learner's understanding ability. Maintaining an open interaction and participation between the learner and the teacher creates an enjoyable and positive learning environment. The learner also feel confident in asking questions and presenting their own ideas which can create an educational opportunity for the teacher. I will use images, pamphlets, and videos to teach. Images are the simplest way to store information in our memory. Giving feedback and providing resources at the end of the teaching will be helpful.
Teaching and Learning Theories
Supporting my teaching philosophy with cognitivism and social constructivism will lead to a positive outcome. "Cognitivism focuses on the inner mental activities for understanding how people learn. Mental process such as thinking, memory, knowing, and problem-solving needs to be explored" (Ertmer, P.A and Newby, T. J, 1993). Cognitivism focuses on the information the learner needs and provides participation for the learner. The learning process includes the learner's thoughts, and beliefs as well as return demonstrations and hands-on activities. According to Hart and Passmore (2014) Presenting the knowledge, providing practice with feedback, and providing learner guidance are the most important instructions in teaching with cognitivism. The learner will demonstrate what they have learned and do more hands on activities and feedback will be provided.
DEVELOPMENT OF OWN TEACHING-LEARNING PHILOSOPHY 4
Social constructivism theory allows the learner to gain knowledge through interaction. The learner engages more in group discussions and presents their own ideas and problems. Muneja (2015) reviews instructional ways that work with social constructivism. These are: help learner to develop new skills, challenge learner beliefs, help learner revise their worldviews, and lastly encourage and promote self-regulation in their learning process (p. 58). I will engage my client in group activities and present any questions. Cognitivism and social constructivism theories will provide a successful teaching-learning experience.
Values and Beliefs
As a Registered Practical Nurse in an acute healthcare setting, teaching and learning is very important because it creates quality of care. My value and belief in teaching and learning as a healthcare provider has influenced my communication with patients and teammates. An example of how my teaching and learning affected my role as a healthcare provider was when a heath teaching has to be provided to a patient with a language barrier who was being discharged home with foley catheter. This patient needed homecare teaching of foley catheter care at home. The patient was very nervous due to the language barrier and lives alone. As a healthcare provider, I realized that visual teaching will be appropriate for this patient. I gave patient some instructional images from the hospital policy and procedure website. I explained the teaching materials in a slow, and clear sentences to the patient. I got the patient involved with a return demonstration. Patient felt confident in the catheter care after the teaching. Teaching and learning was successful.
During teaching and learning, values such as privacy, respect, and dignity is very important. Recognizing these ethical values help to improve nursing practice and develop code of ethics during practice. For example, I always close curtains during teaching and learning time to maintain privacy.
DEVELOPMENT OF OWN TEACHING-LEARNING PHILOSOPHY 5
I keep human dignity and respect to patients a top priority in my values. Patients' beliefs and opinions should be respected. If patients make a decision to refuse care, treatment, or health teaching, their decision must be respected by the healthcare provider.
In conclusion, teaching and learning is important in healthcare due to the modernization and continuing changes in patient care. Patient education is also considered to be a major component in the care giving by the nurse. Healthcare providers always incorporate teaching and learning roles everyday with their patients, families, and teammates so it is important for healthcare providers to increase their knowledge of teaching and learning in order to provide quality of care to their patients.
