The nurse Maria Vasquez is thrilled with the results of creating a new unit council and implementing AACN's Healthy Work Environment (HWE) Standard. A year ago,when she became manager of an impatient unit, she felt as though everything was crashing in on her. The unit was struggling with many issues , including poor patients outcome, decreased morale, stressed staff nurses and high nurse turnover rate. Nurse Vasquez knew that changed had to be made on the unit, so she decided to establish a unit council to address some of the practice issues
The new unit council and nurse Vasquez decided to use AACN's HWE standard they wanted to tackle was skilled communication, They first created several workshops to teach this skill and were very pleased with the response. All staff, including physicians and respiratory therapists, attended. Follow up workshop were then schedule to be completed every year. The unit council decided to tract whether the workshops had any effect on the nurses' stress and burnout, so they decided to use the nursing stress scale (NSS) to measure the stress levels of the unit nurses both before and after the workshop. Nurse Vasquz was very please to see that not only did patients outcome improve on the unit, but nurses's stress scores on the NNS significantly improved as well. She was also happy to find that turnover on the unit had also decreased.
