Case Study Assignment - SafetyMs. J, a 78-year-old single woman, was recently discharged from the
hospital following rehabilitation for a fractured right femur after falling on the
ice approximately 4 weeks ago. She lives with her older sister, Mary, in a
small two-storey house in the country. Her home has a small kitchen with a
gas stove where she loves to cook. She states she has a good appetite,
but she is concerned about how she will manage with meal preparation
now that she is home.
Ms. J has been an active member of her community. She belongs to a
senior's daily walking group and previously attended water aerobics
classes three times a week at her local community pool. She enjoys
attending her weekly church group. Ms. J. states she is worried that she will
not be able to continue these activities.
Since returning home, Ms. J. states that she occasionally feels weak and
unsteady on her feet. She uses a cane when she walks outside but holds
onto furniture when moving inside the house. She walks with rounded
shoulders and often looks down at the floor. She wears glasses but
sometimes she misplaces them in different rooms of the house. Ms. J.
states her bowels move regularly and occasionally she gets up at night to
void. She is able to wash herself each morning at the sink in her upstairs bathroom.
