.  The excerpt is from a non-fiction book Five Days at Memorial: Life

and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital by Sheri Fink. The story describes what occurred in one hospital in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina.  In the book, LifeCare is a long term care facility that rented a floor in the hospital. The LifeCare staff are not considered employees of the hospital, and the hospital does not provide services for the patients.
