Web Exploration Ocean Discovery Journal Outs Cumna Climate Change Web Exploration: Sea Level: Tides and the Rhythmic Rise and Fall of Sea Level EXPLORATION QUESTIONS The following questions are based on information from the Tutorial on Tides and Water Levels (http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/education/kits/tides/tides01_intro.html). As you read through the Tutorial, answer the questions that correspond to each sec- tion of the tutorial What are Tides? a. What is a basic definition of a tide? Where do tidal waves originate, and where do they end? b. What is a high tide? What is a low tide? c. What is tidal range? What is a tidal current? d.Compare and contrast a flood and ebb current. When are they strong? When are they weak? e. How do tidal currents perform in the open ocean? How do they perform near the entrances to estuaries? What Causes Tides? f. Tides are caused by the gravitational attraction of what two celestial bodies? g. What does Newton's law of universal gravitational state? h. Which parameter has a greater effect on tidal forces on Earth? i. Which celestial body has a greater affect on tidal forces on Earth? How is this possible? Compare and contrast the masses and distance of the Earth to the moon and sun Gravity, Inertia, and the Two Bulges j. What is inertia? k How does the moon create a bulge? I. What causes a bulge to be created on the opposite side of the Earth or the "far Side" from the moon? Changing Angles and Changing Tides m. Describe how changes in the relative positions of the moon and sun change in relation to the Earth? n. At what point is the sun at its minimum declination and its maximum declination?

Once you have downloaded and printed the activity worksheet open up NOAA's Tides  (Links to an external site.)

Online Website.

After completing the activity put the worksheet into your Earth Discovery Journal and use it to complete the following questions that you must submit via Canvas. Note: You don't need to submit the actual activity just the answers to the questions below. Do NOT submit the questions themselves simply number the answers.

Utilize this website below

1. Using your graphs determine if the Pacific (West) Coast, Gulf Coast or the Atlantic (East) Coast are diurnal semidiurnal, or mixed tides.

2. Based on the graphs you analyzed, can you predict at what time the next high and low tide will occur for each location?

3. What was the predicted high and low tides over the period graphed? Record the information below:

5. Were there any differences between the predicted and actual water heights? Explain.

6. From the data you have collected, can you determine if tomorrow's predictions will hold true? Explain.

7. Why would it be important to know this information? Can you think of any vocations for which this information may be vital? Explain why.

8. What could some possible causes of the differences between predicted and observed height? List and explain.
