Experimental Details: Week 1
13.3 ml of (+)-1-phenylethylamine
15.63 G of (+)-tartaric acid
225 mL methanol
500 mL Erlenmeyer
Step 1. Add 15.63 G of (+)-tartaric acid
Step 2. Add 225 mL methanol to 500 mL Erlenmeyer flask.
Step 3. Heat on hot plate to nearly boiling.
Step 4. Remove from heat.
Step 5. Slowly add 13.3 mL of (+)-1-phenylethylamine to hot solution.
Step 6. Allow to cool to room temperature, minimizing movement of flask.
Step 7. Cover with parafilm, label, and place into hood until next week.

Experimental Details: Week 2 Step 1': Collect product by suction filtration and wash with minimal methanol. Step 2: Place product in to 125 Erlenmeyer flask and add 45 mL water. Step 3: Add 6.25 mL of 50% NaOH solution and gently mix until all solids are dissolved.
Step 4: Add approximately 30 mL ethyl ether and thoroughly mix for 5 minutes. Step 5: Transfer solution to separatory funnel and separate etheral extract.
Step 6: Dry organic solution (ethereal extract) with anhydrous magnesium sulfate Step 7: Remove the drying agent by gravity filtration and collect the organic solution in a pre-weighted 50-or
100 mL beaker. Step 8: Place in to hood to allow ether to evaporate. Next week, weigh to determine mass of your product. product
