Leadership and management are two components that direct. They share similar and different traits, they functions are different and leadership is a prerequisite to the management. Researcher has presented different aspect of what a leader does and what a management does, hence they both are in position of directing and both have subordinate, whether they are followers or a group. Researchers have presented traits and characteristics that have been observed throughout the century the following are what they all have found to be major leadership traits; intelligence, self-confidence, determination, integrity and sociability. These are what leaders pose and what should be cultivated (Northouse p.19). Hence, there are several definitions of leadership, for example,” leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal,” (Norhouse pg. 3). Another is “leadership is setting a new direction or vision for a group that they follow,” (teamtechnology). According to Warren Bennis, he has composed a list of difference between leaders and managers; manager administers - the leader innovates, manage maintains – the leader develops, manager focuses on systems and structure – the leader focuses on people, manager relies on controls – the leader inspires trust, manager has a short-range view – the leader has a long-range perspectives, manager has his/her eye always on the bottom line – leader’s eye is on the horizon, the manage imitates – the leader originates, the manage accepts the status quo – the leader challenge it, the manager is the classic good soldier – the leader is his/her own
