As a scholar-practitioner concerned with social change, studying how the mind solves problems can be of great
assistance in learning to effectively help others. In this Discussion, you will apply what you have learned about
problem solving to finding a solution to a real-world problem.
To prepare for this Discussion:
Pay particular attention to types of problems, impediments to problem solving, and steps in the problem-solving
cycle.
Problem solving cycle- 1)problem identitification 2) definition of problem 3) constructing a strategy for problem
solving 4) organizing information about a problem 5) allocation of resources; Most of us face the problem of having
limited resources. These resources include time, money, equipment and space. 6) monitoring problem solving; a
prudent expenditure of time includes monitoring the process of solving the problem. Effective problem solvers do
not set out on a path to a solution and then wait until they have reached the end of the path to check where they are.
Rather they check up on themselves all along the way to make sure that they are getting closer to their goal 7)
evaluating problem solving; You need to evaluate your solution after you have finished. Some of the evaluation may
occur right away.
Reflect on the following:
Consider the types of problems that exist and real-world problems that correspond to these types.
What are some of the challenges and impediments we face when posed with solving a problem?
What is the process of problem solving, based on your personal experience?
What techniques are of help when solving problems?
With these thoughts in mind:
Post by Day 3 a description of some general barriers to solving problems effectively. Then, using your knowledge of
problem solving, explain how you would solve a specific, real-world problem. Make sure to identify the structure of
the problem, the impediments to solving the problem, the important steps in the problem-solving cycle(i.e. problem
identification, definition of problem, constructing a strategy for problem solving, organizing information about a
problem, allocation of resources, monitoring problem solving, evaluating problem solving) that apply, and the
specific techniques that will assist in getting the problem solved.
