Sharpen Your PENCILS with Public Relations Public relations (or PR) done right can be one of your most effective marketing activities. PR is more than getting your local newspaper to run a story on your business. It consists of a number of tools that can be classified under the acronym of PENCILS: P = Publications ( e.g. company magazines, annual reports, helpful customer brochures or reports, etc. ) E = Events (e.g. sponsoring sports, trade shows, art or entertainment events ) N = News (e.g. favourable stories about your business, people, products or services) C = Community involvement activities (e.g. contributions of resources (time and/or money) to local community events ) I = Identity media (e.g. stationery, business cards, uniforms and dress codes. etc. ) L = Lobbying activity (i.e. efforts to influence favourable or dissuade unfavourable legislation and rulings ) S = Social responsibility activities (i.e. building a good reputation for corporate social responsibility )
