Types of Power 1 Page 1 of 1 Power! What does it mean to you? What's the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of power?

Watch the "Types of Power" tutorial at the end of your lecture, and write a 300-500 word essay about what you learned from the video. Answer the following questions: Which type of power do you find most effective? Which type of power do you think you have? Do you use it? If so, in what situations? How could you improve your leadership and management skills now that you have a better understanding of the types of power and how they are applied? Remember, always add the 'whys' with the 'whats'.

This tutorial will guide you through the types of power discussed in the text. Read the three tutorials in succession, and look for examples of the following types of power:

Types of Power 1 Page 1 of 1 Page 1 of 1 Power! What does it mean to you? What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of power? The word “power” often has negative connotations, but power can be positive as well. The many types of power can be confusing. Try to observe how legitimate, reward, coercive, reverent and expert power affect relationships within an organization. Hi, Danny, early as usual, I see. Good to see you. Thanks. You know me, always up and ready to go. You did such a great job in Section 3 last week, I’ve given you Section 1 tonight just like you wanted. Nice! Thanks, an extra table on Saturday. I’m walking out of here with two bills at least. You’re awesome! Don’t be surprised if I’m running all night. I wouldn’t give it to you if you couldn’t handle it, and I know you’ll sell tons of pizza shooters tonight. You bet! And I’ll pull ahead of Jolene in the contest for sure. Las Vegas, here I come! Yep, and you’ll earn us a lot of money and keep the customers happy. Have a great shift. Remember, pizza shooters! Mmm, pizza shooters sound good right now, but let’s not stray from the topic at hand. What type of power is being exhibited by Sandy and Danny in this scenario? If you thought reward and reverent power, like Wilbur said to Orville, “You’re correct.” Wait a minute. That’s not right. Oh, yeah, “You’re right, brother!” If people could see a benefit or reward for their actions by doing what others want them to, they are buying into reward power. In this case, Sandy is using reward power by offering something of value to Danny. Danny is using reverent power by working hard, going above and beyond, and by being positive, likeable and trustworthy. He’s earning Sandy’s respect, and she is then giving him what he wants: a better section and more money. This is an example of reverent power. [01:51] [End of Audio]
