Assignment 2 PSYC 560 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY 1. The independent variable is the cleaner scent and the dependent variable is the effect that it had on the participants who were not aware of the citrus scent. The operational definition included participants were asked to indicate as quickly as possible whether a letter string appearing on a computer screen was an existing word. Responses were made by pressing the yes or no on the keyboard. 2. The potential confounding variable is every test there were a higher number of females than males which could change the results of the study. The confounding variable included fifty Dutch undergraduates in study 1 with only 10 males. Study 2 fifty six undergraduates and only 19 were males. And finally study 3 included fifty two Dutch undergraduates and only 6 were males. 3. The strengths and weaknesses to the designs were the first two studies tested the initial hypothesis that exposure to cleaning concept automatically, so that such exposure would speed up participant’s responses to cleaning related words in a lexical decision task for study 1 and guide their expectations of future home activities (study 2). Study 3 examined the effect of cleaner scent on the influence of scent cognition and behavior. Finally they checked whether they were aware of the scent and if so whether they were aware of the influence of the scent on their thinking and doing. Strengths were that the results were effective and the weakness of the design was that they used a majority of female participants. 4. A person who eats and tastes ice cream quickly reacts to brain freeze and his behavior changes. When music is playing in a very loud a person behavior changes to minimizing the volume. And finally when a person looks up at the sun and does not use sunglasses it influences his behavior to block the sun as they feel irritation. 6. A way to measure cleaning related products is by asking with surveys to college students which kind of detergents do they prefer such as tide or the generic brand. And observationally an experiment such as washing clothes with both brands and visually measuring the effects of both products. 7. Construct validity is strong because in each study it showed that by using scent related products did affect the participants. Internal validity was strong because the 3 elements were used in the study. Concurrent validity was strong after the experiment the questionnaire was given and showed that the presence of cleaning related scents did have an effect.
