Character Analysis of John McClane & John Rambo from Leadership Perspective 2013 Leadership can be defined as “The activity of leading a group of people or an organization or the ability to do this” (“Leadership”, n.d.). It is a characteristic trait of every good leader to lead the followers in times of crisis, to think differently in order to resolve prevailing problems, and to act accordingly to the need of the moment. And it is a fact that “Unlike management, leadership cannot be taught, although it may be learned and enhanced…”(“Leadership”, n.d.). It is interesting that not only in literature but in movies too, there are several examples of heroes whose characterizations have been based upon the concepts of leadership and these heroes have gradually emerged as effective leaders through the progression in plot. And to exemplify this concept of a hero-leader the primary endeavor in this paper is to analyze the characters of John McClane, the central protagonist in the movie “Live Free or Die Hard”, and John Rambo, the central character in the movie “Rambo: First Blood II”, under the light of the concept of leadership. John McClane is detective lieutenant with the New York City Police Department (later NYCPD). He has been a police officer for thirty years. While serving in the police, he has received a lot of career awards and decorations. Due to the fact that his pg. 1

It can be added that he does not enjoy using newer technology. As for his activities, besides a regular detective job in the NYCPD, from time to time he is forced by circumstances to fight against variety of villains and to successfully break their elaborate plans. This process involves fighting scenes, shooting, chases on different kind of vehicles and constant risk to life. However, the success in his case is not received because of the presence of any superhero powers but it is provided by a combination of John’s inner qualities, skills and capabilities. He usually deals with that kind of problems with little or no assistance from others. He used to count on himself, his experience and advantages in the surrounding environment. But despite the success in solving such hazards, he personally does not have a reward worthy of his efforts in the case of his personal life as well as work conditions. So, what is the motivation behind his actions and does he understands why he commits such actions? As it turned out, John McClane does it not because he wants to, but because there is no one to replace him and he has no other choice. He does it due to his sense of duty and his pg. 2
