Steve has recently moved to Tampa. It is the beginning of June, and Steve does not yet know what school he will attend starting at the end of August. Steve does not know anyone in Tampa, other than his father. His father, Dan, is in the Army, and is a single parent. Steve is used to moving around a lot, and he has learned a few tricks to making new friends. In his new Tampa neighborhood, there is a group of kids that hang out at the local park and basically play basketball and skateboard, and in general just have fun. This park is within walking distance from his house, and this is important because Steve is not yet old enough to drive, and his dad works long hours, and can't drive Steve to activities. Steve has tried to make friends with these other kids because he likes to also play basketball and skateboard. However, these other kids never seem to let him know when they will be getting together again, and really are not very friendly. He knows that these kids get together and also play video games, but he is never invited to join in for that either. One day one of the older kids tells Steve that the only way he can be a part of the group and fit it in, is to steal $50.00 worth of stuff from a convenient store that is near the park. If Steve will does this small little thing, then the other kids will include him in their activities, and let him join in their group. Steve is used to this kind of thing since he has moved around a lot, and has been asked to do similar kinds of things in the past. When he has complied in the past, he has always been included and has been able to make friends and have fun. He knows stealing is wrong, but he also is considering its just $50.00 worth of stuff. He also knows that if he gets caught, his father will be extremely disappointed in him. Steve knows that his dad is under a lot of pressure at work, and Steve would not want to make any additional trouble for him. However, he also would like to have a group of friends to do fun things with this summer.
