Purpose: To use a physics applet to examine different accelerations Materials: Calculator Procedure: 1. To investigate acceleration, go to the following site: University of Oregon Department of Physics 2. Select the Physics Applet category "Mechanics," and from the "Mechanics" category select "Horizontal Block." 3. In the gray box, the title "Horizontal Block" will appear; under the title there will be a gold dot with the words "choose this applet." 4. Enter the applet and select different initial positions, initial velocities, and accelerations (do not put the units in the boxes). Make sure that you select a range of accelerations from zero acceleration to ten m/s/s. Fill your selections in Table 1. 5. Click here to view an alternative to this virtual lab. Table 1 Examples Initial Position (cm) Initial Velocity (cm/s) Acceleration (cm/s/s) 1 2 3 4 Results: Select and compare the graphs of your zero acceleration trial to a non-zero acceleration trial. In your comparison, please use terms such as linear, non- linear, positive slope, zero slope, negative slope, parabolic. Remember to use full sentences and limit each example to three sentences.
