Greg and Anita are both the only children in their families, and have been married for ten years. They have two
children who are seven and five years old. Greg took a job a few years ago in Seattle, Washington that required them to move there from where they lived in Florida. Anita has an online business, and can work from anywhere. Greg's mother is a widow, and she lives in Florida in the home where he grew up. Anita's parents live in the suburbs in a small town in upstate New York. Anita's father has had health issues for awhile that causes him to fall often and makes common everyday tasks such as driving, impossible for him. For this reason, it is important that he has someone to care for him. Unfortunately, Anita's mother has now begun to decline in health, and is having trouble caring for her husband. Finances for Anita's parents are also quite tight. Their retirement budget doesn't allow for much extra costs.
Greg and Anita had been thinking about what they can do for Anita's parents, when they received the news that Greg's mother has a disease that will require intense treatment and therapy starting in the summer. She will need someone to help her get back and forth to and from doctor appointments, as well as someone to check in on her throughout each day. The doctors are unsure how long the treatment will have to last. They thought about moving here to Seattle, but Greg's mother does not want to leave her home because it holds so many memories for her, and she really enjoys the warm weather that Florida offers.
Greg and Anita need to determine what the best option is for everyone in their family. They have to consider what is best for their parents without sacrificing too much when it comes to raising their children. They also have to take Greg's mother's emotional tie to her home into consideration.
They have come to a few different options:
- Option 1: Anita will go to Florida with the kids in the summer and stay until school is about to start again. She will help Greg's mother hire someone who can drive her where she needs to go, and take care of her general care. Anita and Greg can move her parents into a smaller, less expensive home, and they can use the saved money to hire someone to be there to help them.
Explain the outcome of the situation.
