Do women wait longer than men to receive their orders at coee shops? This
question was studied by an
economics major at Middlebury College.
For a sample of customers, data were collected on the following variables:
Wait Time (in seconds); Gender (0 = male, 1 = female); Age Group (0 = less than 25, 1 = 26 to
40, 2 = over 40); Order (0 = regular, 1 = fancy); Appearance (ranked on a scale from 1 to 10)
Recognizing the measurement scale of the data collected on each variable is important because
the type of data dictates the appropriate data summary methods and statistical procedures.
a. Which variable(s) in the data set are measured using a nominal scale?
b. Which variable(s) in the data set are measured using an ordinal scale?
c. Which variable(s) in the data set are measured using a ratio scale?
