Background: Asthma and obesity are both very common in children, and often occur in the same children. We hypothesized that both asthma and obesity were associated with decreased physical activity. . Methods: School-aged children (N= 122) were divided in 4 groups (healthy, asthma only, obese only, and asthma and obese). Children were asked to perform lung function tests and wear an activity monitor for 7 days. The following were used to measure physical activity: number of steps per day, time spent being active, time spent looking at a screen, time spent in organized sports, and time spent in active transport (e.g. biking to school). We used multiple linear regression techniques to investigate whether asthma, body mass index (BMI, a way to measure obesity) were associated with physical activity. Results: Asthma, BMI, and the interaction between asthma and BMI were not related to any of the physical activity measurements (p 2 0.05). Less than 1 in 5 children reached the recommended daily step count guidelines of 12,000 steps/day.
