OK for the first question given the null and alternate hypothesis I was asked to answer the result of the hypothesis basically rather the null hypothesis holds up or do I have to move to he alternate hypothesis given the following information the instructor provided with a mean time of 2.8, 100 test subjects, with a std. deviation of 1hr, and tested at a 0.05% level of significance. I am using this study to either support the H0 or the H1

For the second question I just need the hypothesis statement I made clarified I guess my instructor thought the z)0.02 was wrong he wanted me to explain my rejection criteria for the hypothesis. I think maybe the number of test subjects are too high or something because the z was pretty high on the sample number I presented.
1) H0: ave time to initiate liquid diet after event is > or = 3 hrs H1: ave time to initiate liquid diet after event is < 3 hrs Then. .. just a matter of collecting sample data . . and conducting hypothesis test procedure. Imagine -- you have sample of 100 events; mean time is 2.8 hrs; sample std dev is 1 hr; >> what is result of test . . if testing at level of significance of 0.05?? 2) Indeed. Could work. . but need clarity in hypothesis statements. .. recommend testing proportions. H0: proportion VAP Infection is < or = 0.02 H1: proportion VAP Infection is > 0.02 now . ..figuring on level of significance of 0.05 . .. what is the rejection criteria ?? ( it is not the z > 0.02 of your discussion ) For number two this is the original problem data I computed below: Step 1: H0: Avg. VAP Infection Rate sampled from 100 patient is < or = 2 or 0.02 H1: Avg. VAP Infection Rate sampled from 100 patients is > 2 or 0.02 Step2: The significant level is 0.05 Step3: Critical region: If calculated z is greater than tabulated z than I will reject H0 Z0.05>1.645 (reject Ho).

Step4: Computation: Z= S- σ O / σ O sqr. root2n Z= 0.05-0.02/0.02 sqr. root2*100 Z= 0.03/0.02 sqr. root2100 Z= 0.03/0.0014 Z=21.42 Step 5: Decision: Since the calculated value falls in critical region I will reject H0.
