STAT 3309 Spring 2013 HOMEWORK #1 MAKE TWO COPIES OF YOUR EXCEL OUTPUT (We’ll use the extra for Homework #2) The insurance agent at Central Insurance Company wishes to analyze the number of minutes that the company’s secretary spends on the phone with customers inquiring about insurance rates. The times for 35 randomly selected calls are given. 8.8 5.7 6.4 6.5 12.9 8.9 7.0 3.6 4.8 11.9 3.9 2.4 12.7 6.3 8.2 13.5 5.4 9.7 13.6 5.9 11.9 6.1 2.7 8.8 11.9 12.4 19.3 5.7 6.5 5.6 12.1 4.9 11.8 5.1 11.1 NOTE: * Be extremely careful when inputting your data! * Unless directions indicate otherwise, do not recalculate anything by hand that has already been calculated by EXCEL! Use values on the output, that is why we are using the computer & not doing calculations by hand! * Perform any calculations in the most efficient way possible. * Interpretations should contain no statistical jargon, and should be related to the data set (don’t forget the units of measure!) INSTRUCTIONS Use the “GUIDE TO EXCEL FOR STAT 3309” below as a guide to obtain (using EXCEL) needed information to answer the questions on the next page. Your EXCEL output must include an ordered array, descriptive statistics, and a histogram. The following apply to ALL homework assignments: The assignment will be graded as a major project and your presentation will reflect the importance you place on your grade. You can answer all questions directly on your EXCEL output and/or you may attach extra paper (a cover sheet is not necessary). I have found that it is better to write your answers by hand. Clearly label your answers and allow adequate room below each problem for my comments. Do not write on the back of any page. All sheets must be stapled (loose paper will not be accepted). Round to 4 significant digits during calculations and round your final answers to 4 decimal places. Show your work when required!! continued. ..

Answer (neatly) the following: 1. Find and list (4 decimal places) the following values: n , x , x , M d , mode, range, s , and the minimum and maximum data value. 2. Calculate x 2 using your calculator. (show work if you want partial credit). 3. Calculate: SHOW YOUR WORK!!!!! a) Variance (calculate it in the most efficient way possible using only one of the answers you gave in question #1) b) Even though the standard deviation appears on your output, use information you obtained from questions #1 and #2 to calculate the standard deviation using the appropriate formula given in class. c) Coefficient of variation 4. Write out (by hand) the frequency distribution for this data (this is not found on your EXCEL output). See your class notes and use some of the work you did to create classes in order to construct the Histogram in EXCEL. 5. What is the relative frequency of the 3 rd class? Show your work. 6. Look at the histogram. Describe the shape (as discussed in class) of the distribution (use complete sentence(s)).
