# Critical Thinking 5: CTE 11: Here we will focus on men's basketball as it has the longer history.

Critical Thinking 5:

Whether you are a college basketball fan or not, you cannot help but be aware of the yearly phenomenon known as March Madness, the NCAA Division I Championship series, which culminates the first week in April by crowning one school’s team, in both men’s and women’s basketball, the national champion. Here we will focus on men’s basketball as it has the longer history.
Click on the following document for a complete description and the requirements for CTE: March Madness
CTE 12: Pennies from checks or credit card purchases.
Randomly select 100 purchases from your checkbook or 100 credit card purchases that you have made in the past year. Do not mix checks and credit card purchases; pick one or the other for this study.
• Would you expect the cents portion of the checks to be evenly represented? Explain why or why not before collecting your sample.
Record the cents portion of those checks into the following table:
Cents Portion 0-24 25-49 50-74 75-99
Number

Use a .05 significance level to test the claim that the four categories are equally likely.
• Describe how you obtained your random sample. Did you have any difficulties making a true random sample? What population is your sample describing? Is it representative of most check or credit purchases in the US/>/>?

The NCAA divides college teams into conferences such as the Big Ten (which contains 11 teams), the Big East and the SEC (Southeastern Conference.) Conferences may shrink or grow over time and the list of member schools may change. As of 2006, the Pacific Ten Conference (Pac 10) consisted of the following schools
Arizona Stanford
Arizona State UCLA
Berkeley USC
Oregon Washington
Oregon State Washington State
Find, on the Internet, a list of the men’s NCAA Division I Championship winners from the first year there was a title winner (1939) to the present. You will need this information and the list of PAC 10 schools above for the exercises.
1. Using a 0.05 level of significance, test the hypothesis that the probability of the NCAA Division I basketball champion being from the Pac 10 is 20%. Repeat the test for the hypothesis that the probability the champion is UCLA is 20%. What do these results say about testing with group data? Include in your answer the URLs of the sites where you found the necessary data.
