In the south slaves were important to the cotton economy. Cotton was in high demand in Europe and other nations. With the invention of the cotton gin, cotton became so profitable that it increased the demand for slaves. While the cotton Gin reduced the labor for removing seeds, it did not decrease the needs for slaves to pick the cotton. In 1861 eleven southern sates seceded from the Federal union with the intent of establishing a confederacy of states that would protect the institution of slavery.  Pro slavery advocates felt the end to slavery would kill the economy in the south. They also claimed that if all slaves were freed there would be widespread violence similar to Nat Turners 1831 Slave Revolt. Pro Slavery advocates felt that slavery had existed throughout history including biblical times and Jesus never spoke against it so how could it be wrong. Pro Slavery advocates defended the use of slavery on the grounds of economics and social status as well as saying they are not responsible for the existence of slavery. Southern Slave owners claimed that their slaves were better off then free laborers.
