A plantation owner

You know I don't understand why the Northern states want to try and free the slaves that we have owned for many years. Our slaves are a big part and huge help in keeping our farms successful and profitable all year long. We grow 60 percent of the worlds cotton, provide over half of all U.S export earnings and furnish 70 percent of the cotton consumed by the British textile industry. Without the help of the slaves our cotton economy would crumble, the tobacco crops would dry up in the fields and the rice would cease being no longer profitable. The economy would drop and hurt us all for years to come if we to release the slaves. Our slaves are well taken care of when they fall ill or when they reach old age. We also protect them from anyone who tries to harm them and we teach them on how to care for themselves and their families. They are able to eat any crops they desire here on my land. A slave is always sure of support throughout their life and can marry whom they please. Freeing the slaves would not be good for anyone as this would only cause problems and a widespread of unemployment in the south. Slavery has existed throughout history and is the natural state of mankind. Without us the black race never would of improved physically, intellectually, or morally and they should thank us for giving them such a civilized existence. As of right now we have a great life, our economy is doing well and are richer than any country in Europe besides England. If you try to come and free our slaves then be prepared for the fight of your life.
