With the end of the Civil War when the southern agricultural states were defeated and occupied by northern Federalist troops, it was then determined that the United States economy would develop more as an industrialized entity. Between 1865 and the 1950s, the United States went on to become an industrial giant that grew ever more entagled in world affairs because of the need to expand trade markets. The US went from a North American continental empire to a global one in the Spanish American War of 1898, and its economic imperialism soared during the course of the 20th century.
Briefly explain how most conflicts (i.e. Spanish American War, WWI, WWII, Cold War, etc.) where the US was concerned had economic causes. What have been some of the short-term and long-term positive and negative results of the transformation of the US into a global industrial giant? On the surface, it appears our populations have reaped the benefits, but in what ways have we suffered?
