The Rise of the West Notes

This theme refers to the emergence of Europe as a global power, and the ability of its nations to expand their institutions and customs to other parts of the world. In time, this theme also characterized much of the growth and change in the United States. Westward movement was equated with opportunity, but such movement led to clashes with indigenous peoples (Native Americans). Territorial and economic expansion, meanwhile, became a powerful dynamic and, by extension, a driving force behind historical change.
