UNTEST
In this section, Create ONE ID for a test. IDs are key people, places, events, or concepts (so "George Washington" or "trickle-down economics" for example).
HINT: Create ONE ID for this section. IDs may include key people, places, events or concepts.
THE ID should INCLUDE: an explanation of who/what/when/why it is important & then you will need to explain why you chose that ID for the question.
EXAMPLES (not to be used):
Cahokia
- Who: Cahokians/Mississippians
When: 1150 CE, abandoned about 1300CE
Where: modern day St. Louis along the Mississippi River, greater Southwest
Why: key trade center, largest Mississippian settlement, organized Chiefdoms,
hierarchical political set up, surrounded by smaller "towns" (suburbs)
Consumer Revolution:
Consumer Revolution is the term that is used to describe the change of consumerism that occurred in a short time period in the 17th and 18th century. Before this time goods like clothing, tools, utensils, and furniture that were hand made by craftsmen or manufacturers were considered luxury items and were reserved for the wealthy. There were multiple reason for this which involved advances that were made in manufacturing and transportation. Another reason involved credit that colonists could now use to make purchases. The ability to afford these goods became even more available to most commoners once the incomes of Americans increased. As the gap between those who could and could not afford these items closed the dividing line between the rich and the average individual closed with it. The middle class could now afford the newest fashion and best foods. The idea that you could present yourself as higher class allured many but in tern caused a massive flood of debt.
I chose this topic as an ID because I think it is fascinating to see aspects of countries start to modernize and resemble something that is extensively practiced to this day. Consumerism is one of the biggest markets today and knowing at what point this begins to happen allows us readers to connect more to the people of this time. It was not so long ago that goods that are available to all were once reserved for the rich.
