I have uploaded the instructions for the final Writing Assignment for this course (in accordance with the syllabus and schedule for the class). You have a brief description and list of core sources in Learning Module 7 in: Writing Assignment Materials (the first file that appears in the list of contents for that module); you have detailed instructions under the Assignments tab (click on: Writing Assignment, and it will open up to the complete set of instructions). The paper is brief (2 pages/600 words); be sure to use the full amount allowed (shortchanging a paper this short will result in a poor grade). All core sources you will need are provided for you, as are links to additional sources for your use. This is not a research paper which requires you to go searching for your own primary and secondary sources and is therefore quite time consuming. This assignment simply asks you to do a close read of the materials which you have at your fingertips, analyze the contents, determine a strong thesis that you can support using documentary evidence, and produce a 2-page paper with the results of your work.
WAR AND REVOLUTION: brief description and core document links
prompt: Why might it be correct to argue that the Great War conditioned or determined the subsequent history of the 20th century?
context: In August 1914 Europe plunged into war -- a Great War, as it was quickly named. Although popular opinion remarked that the war would be over by Christmas, the war raged on until November 1918, when German forces surrendered. At war's end, the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian Empires ceased to exist, Russia had its revolution, and Germany was forced to accept the "war guilt" clause at Versailles. Nine million men lost their lives between 1914 and 1918, thus creating the "lost generation" of the interwar years.
