Presentation Previously in this unit, you explored the literary ideas of motifs and juxtaposition. If you do not remember those terms, now might be a good time to go back and review them because you will be creating a slideshow presentation dealing with the juxtaposition of the motifs in Lear . Don’t worry. You get to choose which one you will investigate. OpenOffice provides a free slideshow program that you can download. Your presentation should be 8 slides long: Slide 1: Title Slide, 5 points Slide 2: Introduction, 10 points Slides 3-4: Body Slides (one aspect of the juxtaposition), 15 points each Slides 5-6: Body Slides (the other aspect of the juxtaposition), 15 points each Slide 7: Context of Order vs. Chaos, 15 points Slide 8: Conclusion, 10 points Each "body" slide will be worth 15 points: 5 points for your idea, 5 points for the explanation of your idea, and 5 points for the support from the text for that idea. The introduction and conclusion slides will be worth 10 points each: 5 points for your idea and 5 points for the clarity of your argument. All of the following motifs can be found in Lear and represent the larger contradiction of order and chaos. Pick one of the following juxtapositions to examine: 1. sanity / madness (wise / foolish) 2. loyalty / betrayal 3. natural / unnatural 4. legitimate / illegitimate 5. justice / injustice 6. sight / blindness 7. reality / appearance 8. stability / instability 9. authority / anarchy Really think it through and connect the dots before you choose a topic. Try to catch all instances of the motif and what they tell you. If you decide to investigate sanity/madness, for example, you should consider the following: When does Lear’s insanity begin? Was he sane before he decided to divide his kingdom? Does it start only when he divides his kingdom and rejects Cordelia, his most-loved daughter? Think about the role of the fool, who says things that are wise and full of insight. Why does Edgar pretend to be the mad Poor Tom? Definitely examine Lear’s descent into madness during the storm. Is he really rehabilitated toward the end? Click here to download this assignment. Please submit your completed project to the Project: King Lear Presentation assignment link for grading. Create a Travel Brochure Project
Background image of page 1
Have you ever gone on vacation? Where did you go? How did you learn about the place before you went there? More than likely, you used a travel brochure to learn about your destination. For the project in this unit, you will design a travel brochure for the “perfect” trip. A travel brochure is a pamphlet containing useful information about a particular place. It includes facts, pictures, and information about special points of interest. Travel brochures are designed to “sell” the destination to a traveler. If the traveler likes what he or she sees, the destination may be visited. Before you design your own travel brochure, take some time to find models of travel brochures online. Using your favorite Internet search engine, type the key words “travel brochure pdfs” to find examples. Take some notes over the following questions: What do you notice about the brochures? How are they written? How do they attract readers? Writing an Editorial For previous units, you have written persuasive essays. An editorial, or Op-Ed article, is essentially a persuasive essay fit for publication in a newspaper. Your assignment is to choose a controversial topic related to the theme of wealth and poverty and to write an editorial on the subject. Be creative and be sure to choose a topic that is controversial. (Remember that George Orwell chose to write about the subject of beggars, and that Huey Long made a speech about sharing wealth within a society.) Also, be sure to take a clear position on the topic and to support your statements with examples and supporting evidence to back up your argument. Don’t forget to include the 5 W’s.
