Writing Assignment #3:  Annual Report Analysis Preparation—Read Carefully 1. In class, you have analyzed the Goldman Sachs equity analysis report on Network Appliance looking specifically  at how the document was designed, for whom the document was designed, and whether (and for whom) the  document was effective.  2. Choose a Fortune 500 company for whom you can find a colorful, engaging, and descriptive Annual Report.  This  can be a web-based Annual Report (like P&G which you will see in class) or a separate pdf file. Annual Reports  are generally found on the Investor Relations link on the Fortune 500 company’s website.   3.  NOTE: The Annual Report you choose should (a) NOT  be just a page or two before the company addends the  required 10-K financial analysis  (b) NOR be just a letter to the shareholders.  Either of those will impede your  analysis.  Choose a full, rich report— full of visuals (photos, colorful charts, videos) and verbals (lots of  descriptive, powerful language)—that powerfully describes the company and its business.   For information on the Annual Report:   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annual_report   WRITING PROMPT Analyze the Annual Report of a single Fortune 500 company of your choice, explaining the most powerful  visual and verbal strategies the document uses to target its intended audience and whether those strategies  are effective and successful. Here are some  ‘guiding questions’  to help you think through the analysis and the writing process  What  verbal  or  visual   strategies (techniques) did the Annual Report’s author/designer use to target his/her  intended audience(s)?  Be SPECIFIC. What was the intent of the Annual Report?  Why was it developed?  What were the results the Annual Report’s  author/designer was trying to achieve?  Be SPECIFIC. What stance does the Annual Report take—does it merely inform? If so, how can you tell?  Does it seek to  persuade?  If so, how can you tell? Was the Annual Report successfully targeted to its audience(s)?  How specifically?  Who precisely is that  audience?  Who reads this Annual Report and why? Does the Annual Report show any particular organization?  If it does, does that tell you anything about the writer’s  strategy? Who would read the Annual Report and why? For what would the reader be looking?  Conclude by summarizing the visual and verbal strategies you found in the Annual Report and then explaining  briefly what specific communication strategies you found most effective and powerful. REMEMBER our structural requirements:
