OUTLINE/Instructions The Importance of Religious Tolerance in Modern Society Paper Objective: I want you to formulate an idea of religious tolerance based on the readings that you will encounter in this course. You shall notice that the first and the last lessons of this course discuss broad theoretical issues ranging from tolerance of religious diversity, spirituality, universality to the current theories of the biological underpinnings of religious experience, while the rest of the readings focus on specific religious traditions. It is my expectation that these readings will help you develop your own view of religious tolerance and the details from the individual religious traditions (lessons 2-12) will provide you with specifics helpful in providing evidential support for the arguments you shall develop to support your understanding of tolerance. The final paper should be no less than 4 and no more than 7 pages long. (word count 1000-1800), 12 pt. font, double spaced. Thesis: Hate crimes based solely on religious differences is an old age issue in societies all around the world. In more recent times, these crimes have increase significantly, especially in the United States after the tragedy of 9/11. I believe that religious tolerance is possible in modern society, and that through proper education in both schools and churches, populations can learn to respect the diversity of religion around the world. Body: What is religious tolerance? Definition by Locke : “The only business of the Church is the salvation of souls, and it no way concerns the commonwealth, or any member of it, that this or the other ceremony be there made use of.” Strong words concerning tolerance from Locke, The letters were written by Locke when he was in exile. Locke argues that more religious groups actually prevent civil unrest. Locke argues that civil unrest results from confrontations caused by any magistrate's attempt to prevent different religions from being practiced, rather than tolerating their proliferation. Locke believed that persecution and punishment could never secure consent to the state religion so it would be best to let people worship as they please. I agree with Locke when he talks about one cannot force another human being to have faith. Definition by Voltaire: Voltaire believed to fight to the death for your right to believe the way you do. He promoted religious tolerance and his influence is strongly felt in western society. He was very worried about the tendency of religion to become violent and intolerant. Definition by Kant: Kant argues for an enlightened form of political power that would allow subjects to argue among themselves, so long as they remained obedient to authority. Kant argues against religious intolerance by pointing out that although we are certain of our moral duties, human beings do not have apodictic certainty of God’s commands. Thus a religious belief that demands a contravention of morality (such as the burning of a heretic) can never be justified. My own definition: To recognize and respect others beliefs and practice without sharing them. Tolerance does not require acceptance but
