CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION Making Your Dreams Come True All our dreams can come true—if we have the courage to pursue them. —WALT DISNEY CHAPTER OBJECTIVES After completing this chapter, you will be able to: Begin the journey toward career fulfillment. Learn about marketing yourself effectively. Review the steps of the job search process. You are about to take the first steps of one of the most important journeys you will ever take … the journey toward career fulfillment. Although you will travel many miles to make this dream come true, you know that the goal is worth the effort. This book will help you realize that dream. It will help you gain a clearer focus of yourself, your goals, your methods of achieving those goals, and your satisfaction with what you have achieved. The various chapters teach you about self-assessment and promotion; the tools necessary to market yourself; techniques to consider before, during, and after an interview; tips on what to do after the job offer including evaluating the offer; and suggestions for job success for the career changer as well as the new entry-level employee. Because marketing yourself is so critical to your career success, this idea appears as a theme throughout the book with reminders of why and how self-marketing should be integrated into your career campaign. So, let’s take a closer look at marketing yourself. MARKETING YOURSELF If you have ever taken a basic marketing course, you already know that to be a good seller of a product or service (or yourself!), you must understand the five Ps of marketing: product place price promotion presentation

In an introductory marketing course, these concepts serve as a springboard for discussing and developing marketing strategies. If you developed a product and were preparing to sell it, you had to consider the five Ps: What exactly is your product and how is it different from (or better than) other similar products? Where will you sell your product? Who are the potential buyers of the product and where are they? How much should you charge for your product and how does that price compare to similar products being offered? How will you let others know about your product and how will you develop its presentation to appropriate markets? These marketing basics are just as applicable to marketing yourself as they are a new product. Following is a discussion of these marketing concepts as they relate to your personal career development. Product That’s you! Although you are not a commodity, you should start looking at yourself as a product: What are your features? What can you do well and how will hiring you be money wisely spent? What are some things you can’t do? How will you get people interested in knowing what benefits there are to hiring you? Place Where do you intend to market yourself? Globally? Nationally? Regionally? Locally? Where will your buyers be? Is there anywhere you are unwilling to go? Must you keep your career search local? That’s ok, but remember, the more broad-based your marketplace, the better. Price This can be tricky. Of course, you want to earn the highest salary possible. At the same time, your buyers want value and do not want to overpay for the employees they hire. While most buyers will pay a competitive price for a good product, there are some employers who want to employ an individual for the lowest salary possible. So, how do you price yourself so you are able to close the sale? If you are a new graduate or entry- level employee, you don’t have much of a yardstick to measure how much you are worth; however, you do want to be paid the same salary as someone else with your education and qualifications.
