SOC 1013: Introduction to Sociology Spring 2013 Assignment 2: Stratification - Poverty Due: March 21, 2013 Use the following steps to access the required information: Go to www.census.gov/statab/www/ccdb.html Click on State and County Quick Facts Choose the state of Texas from the drop-down menu (or click on Texas on the map) Click GO Choose Bexar county from the drop-down menu Click GO Choose an additional county you would like to compare with Bexar County, and repeat the last two steps to access information about your selected county. You may want to choose your home county (or if your home county is Bexar, choose any other county you have an interest in evaluating). Using the Census web site as directed above, answer the following questions: 1. Identify the county you will be comparing with Bexar County. Report the name of the county and its percent change in population, 2010 to 2011, according to the table provided by the census. 2. Locate the following information for each of the counties you are comparing, as well as for the state of Texas: total population [2010], percent female, percent high school graduates, percent non-Hispanic, percentage below poverty level, and per capita money income. Now create a table in Excel (or use the table function in Word) that displays this information (for both counties and the state) in a clear and effective way. You should include each of the above mentioned variables as categories along the column; and Texas, Bexar, County X should appear in the 1 st row of the table. Refer to The Chicago Guide to Writing about Numbers , a book available in electronic format through the UTSA library ( www.lib.utsa.edu ), see Chapter 6 for information on creating effective tables. 3. Summarize the content of the table you constructed in Question 2 according to the guidelines set forth in The Chicago Guide to Writing About Numbers , see Chapter 9 for example statements used to describe the information contained in a table. Your answer should be in complete and concise sentences and should incorporate percentages/values from the table you created in number 2. 4. Do some background research on your selected county to find out why your selected county’s poverty rate is high or low relative to Bexar County [Hint: see chapter 6.4 in the Barkan textbook for a discussion of poverty]. Also, be sure to consider the county characteristics that you reported in Question 2 above (you may consider any of the characteristics provided in the table that you think may have an influence on the poverty rate). Now, present a paragraph discussing the reasons why your selected county’s poverty is high or low relative to Bexar County. Your paragraph should use complete and concise sentences (answers should have at least 3 sentences) and incorporate some of the data from the table.
