Technology Assessment Assignment
Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to enable you to organize and assemble a technology assessment (TA). As technologists, this
type of study is something that will affect you; in that you will either be involved in doing an assessment or relying on one to give you
relevant information. This process is widely used by business, industry, education, government bodies, and other institutions to
gauge whether or not a particular technology is suitable to use in solving problems or expanding opportunities. There is a wide
variety of TA studies; some involving comprehensive efforts that may result in a several hundred page report, others involving a
cursory analysis that may only span several pages.
In practice, a TA seldom comprehensively identifies and analyzes all aspects of a technology. The areas investigated by TA studies
are usually considerably restricted because of human, financial and time constraints; or a decision is made to concentrate on certain
areas/issues from the outset ("bounding-process").
Therefore, literature dealing with technology assessment studies usually differentiates between comprehensive TA-analyses, which
consider the widest possible spectrum of impact areas, incorporate alternative technologies in the study and develop potential
courses of action; and partial TA-analyses, which only consider one or a limited number of impact areas in which technologies are
introduced (Wright, 1996). Because of the time constraints of the course, your TA assignment will fall in the "partial TA" category.
There are a number of definitions for a technology assessment. For example, in an assignment dealing with the use of bovine
somatotropin, a growth hormone in cattle feed, a West Virginia University professor gave the definition of technology assessment as
a system that identifies, analyses, and evaluates technology's potential secondary consequences (whether bad or good) in terms of
its impacts on social, cultural, political, economic, and environmental systems and processes (Bovine Somatotropin, n.d.).
Although this is a fairly general definition, it is one that lists some of the more important aspects of the process. In order to explore
the concept of TA in a little more depth, and along the way discover other possible definitions, a brief historical investigation may be
helpful. Please download the complete version of this information at the end of this assignment description. Reading the complete
TA description will give you a general idea of the variety in purpose, application, scope, and format in the makeup of a TA.
Next, we will focus on those components, as they will be incorporated in your technology assessment project.
Technology Assessment Assignment Requirements
As stated earlier, your TA project will be a partial TA so that you experience the process in as much breadth as possible, though not
the depth that a comprehensive analysis would require. As a technologist in your particular field, this would probably be similar to
what you would experience on the job, unless you were employed in a company that specialized in TA for some purpose.
For this assignment, you are to assume you are employed in a company of your choosing that is considering implementing a
technology, also of your choosing, to solve a problem or exploit an opportunity for your company. It is your responsibility as an
employee of that company to provide a TA that presents the information necessary for management to make a decision whether or
not to employ that technology within its operations.
You should provide information for your company that they can come to terms with quickly and is supported by reliable references.
Your TA must show sound research by pointing to sources where further information can be found. Your employer will be looking for
good, practical information, with the substance and background that will provide the foundation for sound decision making.
The scope and content of your TA will be specified by the following headings for your paper (my recommendation is to use them):
Introduction
--Include the name of your company, the type of business it is involved in, the technology you are assessing, and how it may aid
your company's strategic plan.
Historical Background of Technology
--Include a brief historical background of the technology you are assessing This may include its beginning or discovery, its
development, and past applications.
Present applications and development
--Include an overview of how the technology is presently used. Discuss the technology's stage of deployment and maturity,
particularly in the applications used most predominantly in your particular business.
Current state of international technology
--Include an overview of the state of the technology outside the borders of the United States. Do not restate information already
discussed involving this technology, but simply research the use of the technology in other countries and compare it to its
applications and stage of deployment within the United States. Cultural impact may also be included here.
Positive Outcomes
--Include the advantages of using this technology, both within your particular sector, industry, or organization and in applications
involving areas outside your area of concern. Examples may involve efficiency, ease of use, learning curves, or ease of integration.
Negative consequences
--Include disadvantages of implementing the technology along with any negative outcomes resulting from its use. This could include
economic, social, and environmental effects.
Future applications
--Include future outcomes of the present development and trends of the technology. Discuss how these future developments could
be applied within your company's strategic plan.
Conclusion
--Include a brief summary of the pros and cons of implementing the technology within your company. Make your comments as
concise as possible, keeping in mind that management and the technical staff of your company need to be able to quickly access
the information and references you have provided to make their recommendations. They may even skip to this section to get a quick
take on the important summary points of your assessment. You may wish to elaborate on what it may cost your company to not
implement this technology.
General Requirements of the TA
Your technology assessment should have:
6-7 pages of content (in addition to the cover sheet and works cited pages)
double-spaced, and
include citations within the paper and a list of references at the end of the paper that adhere to the APA style guide.
The College of Technology requires APA style compliance for formatting formal papers and this TA will fall into that category. For

. Remember that it is
paramount for you to provide enough information about your sources that if we wished to do further research based on your study,
we could easily find the sources you have used. You may use either online or more traditional sources from the library, but be aware
that the quality of your assessment will be affected by the quality of your sources. Also note that paraphrased information and direct
quotes require slightly different citation formats. Lack of in-text citations and adequate references raise questions of plagiarism, so
be sure you include too much rather than not enough information in that regard.
If you have some questions about your writing skills or you wish to learn more about the writing process, the Purdue University's
