INTERNSHIP WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT DUE DATE: FRIDAY, August 25 th (5pm) 1 Write a 7-8 (this refers to content and does not include your cover or Works Cited pages) page research paper on ONE of the topics below. Any papers submitted that are under the 7-page requirement will be penalized. 2 This is a research paper; you must include in-text citations for any quotes and a Works Cited page (MLA format). 3 The paper’s grade will be based on content, organization, and mechanics (punctuation, spelling, and grammar.) 4 The paper counts as 25% of your final internship grade. 5 Papers are to be submitted to a faculty reader that will be assigned by the Internship Coordinator during Week Five. 6 Late papers submitted during week 8 will receive a one letter grade drop. 7 No papers will be accepted after week 8 and will result in a zero for the assignment and failure of the class. Note that this paper is an essay and not simply a report on what you witnessed or did at your internship site. Express your opinion in a thesis, and support it with evidence based on your experience and research. Ideally, you’ll be working on the paper and its research throughout the quarter. Please consult the staf at the WriTng Center or the Library iF you would like assistance or advice—they’re there to help! ±OPICS 1. Ethics Identfy a speciFc eThical issue in your Feld and how iT is, or is noT, addressed in your workplace. IT’s recommended you discuss iT wiTh someone aT your siTe To see whaT he or she Thinks of The issue and how To handle iT . Ideally, your thesis will take a stance on what should be done, which will be supporTed by evidence from work experience, The inTerview, and research. (NoTe ThaT The eThical issue should be partcular To your Feld or indusTry, raTher Than someThing such as The practce of inTernships in general.) 2. OrganizaTonal Analysis WhaT is The mission or purpose of The company wiTh which you are inTerning, besides simply generatng proFT? WhaT does iT conTribuTe To socieTy, The indusTry, or The world aT large? Make and support a specifc, compelling claim on behalF oF the company as your thesis. Consider several elemenTs of The organizaton and how They conTribuTe To The mission or purpose. Discuss iT wiTh coworkers. Look for how di±erenT deparTmenTs conTribuTe To a common goal.

3. Future Trends in the Field Select and research a developing trend that is afecTng or may afect your Feld. How will it impact your parTcular internship site? Your thesis should ofer some soluTon or proposal to deal with or capitalize on the trend . Support your claim with evidence ±rom your work experience, consultaTon with your supervisor, and research. 4. Career Explora±on Research the role and responsibiliTes o± a posiTon you desire at your internship site, even i± it’s not the role you are currently in. Make a claim (thesis) about why that role would be a good or poor choice For you? ²hough your ±eelings may be personal, support your claim and opinions with evidence gathered ±rom the jobsite, interviews, and research. 5. Organiza±onal Structure Obtain or develop an organizaTonal chart (posiTons, lines o± authority, departments, etc.) ±or your internship site. Determine your posiTon on this chart. Who seems to have power and in³uence? Who has respect and why? Compare your observaTons with the chart—does it re³ect what you’ve observed? ±or your thesis, make some speci²c claim (how/why) about the organizaTon’s efecTveness. De±end it with both evidence you’ve seen and your research. 6. Project Workfow Using at least two projects as examples, study how an assignment moves through your internship site. IdenT±y who becomes involved and at what points. How do they contribute to moving the project along? ±or your thesis, make some claim or argument about this work³ow. Is it efecTve? Why? does it need improvement? What sort? Prove your opinion by describing and analyzing what you’ve seen. Discuss the reasoning behind the system with your coworkers. Present ±urther support ±rom arTcles or books. 7. Technology Analysis Analyze the pros and cons o± technology used in the company. Can you make a single, insigh´ul claim (thesis) about technology’s efect on the workplace? ²he idea is not simply to explain how technology is used, but to ofer some assessment oF its efecTveness. It’s recommended you discuss the advantages and limitaTons o± technology with a supervisor and also research current technology relevant to the Feld. 8. Economic Trends What efect does the current economy have on your internship site (e.g., lower billing hours, reducTon in clients, decreased leads, etc.)? Observe how your sponsor has responded to these changes. Your thesis should make some claim about what you Feel should be done given the current economic climate. Support that claim by analyzing and explaining what you’re witnessing on the job, what your sponsor ±eels about it, and what relevant arTcles are saying. It’s okay to suggest an alternaTve method, but support your idea.
