Essay 1

Introduction

The journal, English Language in Transition, 1880-1920 serves as a forum for experts to analyze works of poetry, drama, fiction, & subjects of cultural importance from the late-Victorian, to early 20th century era of British literature. This includes later material written about important events, and peoples during this era. The journal was created by Purdue Professor Helmut E. Gerber as a place where literary historians could discuss the works of so called "minor" writers from the end of the Victorian era, until the end of World War 1. It was first published in 1957 and would publish quarterly until November 2020. The writers in this forum were chosen by an advisory board consisting of English professors from England, Canada, Hong Kong, and the United States.

The article, "Lawrence of Arabia in comics" (vol .63 no.1, 2020, p. 99-111.) by Professor Stephen E. Tabachnick, serves as an analysis of the many comic adaptations of T.E. Lawrence's life and his exploits. Tabachnick is a professor of English at the University of Memphis and is an expert in the graphic novel medium. He has also written a book on how to teach them. The article attempts to scrutinize the historical accuracy, and lack thereof, of these comics. The author gives examples of inaccuracies found throughout many literary works from the hilariously inaccurate Thrilling Adventure Stories (February 1975), by Jeff Rovin, with art by Frank Thorne, to the to the relatively accurate T.E. Lawrance manga written and drawn by Tomako Kosaka. He attempts to apply historical and literary analysis to access each stories value as a piece of literature. Due to the content, Historical analysis, and the structure of this article, the journal English Language in Transition, 1880-1920 is intended for college graduates with degrees in a literary or historical field.

Expectations

The author asks the reader to have a basic understanding of who T.E. Lawrance is, and how large of an effect he had on World War 1. He assumes the reader has read Lawrence's Seven Pillars of Wisdom and references the book frequently. "After all it was Lawrence himself who wrote in the 1922 Oxford text of Seven Pillars of Wisdom that after the Deraa incident, he felt a desire for pain comparable to that of a moth's striving toward the light." The author never explains the Deraa incident, even while mentioning it multiple times after, and expects the audience to have previous knowledge on the subject. Because of this, it is hard to believe Tabachnick is speaking to a general reader who is not well versed in early 1900s literature, and history. It appears he is targeting someone who is either college educated in English, or who has as deep knowledge of the era's literature and historical events.

Structure

The article's structure might make it difficult for a casual reader to enjoy. The author avoids using visual aids throughout most of the article, only including a single comic panel at the very end. There were several occasions throughout the article where the author had the choice to use a panel from the comic, but instead chose to quote and contextualize in every occasion. "For instance, it shows Lawrence having destroyed one Turkish biplane with a flare gun and destroying a second plane by throwing a knife into its motor." Here, he could have replaced this text with those panels from the comic, but instead he chose to use prose to get his point across. This lack of visual aids might make it difficult for the author to keep the attention of a casual reader. Because of this, we can assume the article is written for an expert in the literary or historical field, that are used to verbose writing.

This article can come off as unorganized and might become tedious for a casual reader. Tabachnick avoids using subheadings of any kind to separate the topics. Instead, He uses paragraph breaks as his only form of organization. This turns the article into a massive word bubble that might become obnoxious to read through for someone who is not incredibly interested in the historical analysis of literature. The lack of subheadings also makes it inconvenient to find a specific topic of interest in the article. Because of these structural attributes of the article, we can assume the intended audience to be an expert in the literary field with a high amount of interest in the topic at hand.

Content

The author goes into a great amount of detail about each topic. This deep analysis might become overwhelming for a casual reader. This is mainly shown in his analysis of Tomako Kosaka's manga T.E LAWRENCE. Tabachnick spends 7 paragraphs on this single piece of literature and dives deep each idea that he brings forth. "But where the sensationalist comics that we have previously discussed create incidents that bear no relation to the facts of Lawrence's character and career and historical events whatsoever, it must be said for Kosaka that even when inventing some incidents, she triangulates from a framework of known fact and creates these incidents in order to amplify her sincerely held and carefully worked out interpretation of his character." A casual reader could be satisfied at this point with this short positive review of Kosaka's work. However, Tabachnick continues after this to dive into several facets of the manga, focusing on the historical accuracy of Kosaka's portrayal of Lawrence's sexuality, religious beliefs, and personal life. This deep analysis of a literary work is clearly meant for readers with extensive knowledge of Lawrence and the literature surrounding him. Because of this, we can assume this article is meant for someone who is college educated in 1900s British history and literature.

The author avoids analyzing these stories without addressing the entertainment value or the intended audience of each comic. This is extremely apparent with his analysis of "Lawrence, the desert virgin" in the series "Bloody Stories: Comics for Adults". "True to its series name, "Bloody Stories" focuses exclusively on the sadomasochistic currents to be found in the Lawrence story, which it embellishes with copious factual invention." Tabachnick then goes on to discuss the many inaccuracies without circling back to the series that it was published in. Clearly "Bloody Stories" is a series meant as darker entertainment for adults and the Lawrence comic serves its purpose perfectly well. The author avoids touching upon this point instead focusing his analysis solely on this historical accuracy of the comic. This makes the article rather dull for casual readers who are unaware of the historical context behind this analysis. Thus, the intended reader of this article is an English or History grad with previous knowledge or interest in Lawrence and British literature of the era.

Along with all of this, Tabachnick mainly ignores the original intended audience of these literary pieces, instead he focuses on their historical validity to determine a work's literary value. This is evident in his consistent remarks about how Larence's physical appearance is portrayed throughout the many comics. "First, then, the bad: here are a few examples of the kind of inaccuracy and sensationalism that are unfortunately typical of almost all of the Lawrence comics that were created before about 1980. Thrilling Adventure Stories (February 1975), by Jeff Rovin, with art by Frank Thorne, gives us a stereotypically heroic comics' face bearing no resemblance whatsoever to Lawrence's face." Here, the author dismisses this story as "bad" due to a historical inaccuracy without accounting for the original audience of this comic being a young western crowd whom, at the time, might have been turned off by a departure from the classic superhero look. This focus on historical accuracy clearly shows the intended audience of this article to be college educated with an interest in accurate historical pieces of literature.

Working Short Conclusion

Tabachnick does a lot to give the reader an accurate literary and historical analysis on several comic adaptations of T.E. Lawrenc's life. The article's monotonous structure, historical focus, and high expectations make it obvious that the intended reader of this article, and the journal, are college graduates in either a literary or historical field.

Essay 2

Abstract

In the article, The Consumer Testing of Food Package Graphic Design, Robert P. Hamlin writes an article for the British Food Journal about how food packaging designs are used for advertisements and sales. A technique in this article was used to for measuring the impact of graphic designs on "consumer choice and package intentions" (Hamlin, 2016). The technique will allow multiple proposed graphic designs for the same product to be compared with each other as well as with their competitors up to a maximum of eight designs. With three examples of the test being presented, the results showed that "Graphic design has a massively and statistically significant impact on consumer choice" (Hamlin, 2016).

This article is great for those who want to know about advertising and making product designs. The examples and techniques used in this article seem to be very helpful and can be useful in the future. It was well-written and put together nicely. With all this being said, the intended audience for this article would have to be those who are new and upcoming designers, especially those looking to make products designs for advertising and marketing.

Keywords: product, design, marketing, advertisement

Expectations

In this article, Hamlin expects the readers to understand and learn how the test and designs have an influence on consumers' choice of product. . These basic expectations can be easy for anyone to meet. An aspiring designer can easily follow through with this reading and use it to their advantage. In the article,  Hamlin stated that "The concept that the package is itself a point-of-sale advertisement has been established in the academic literature for some time (e.g. Westerman et al., 2013). The research literature on consumer reactions to packaging has been dominated by studies relating to single cue" (The Consumer Testing of Food Package Graphic Design, 2016). This apparently has been a topic of study for quite some time, and Hamlin then went on to explain how graphic designing was added to the mix

Tests

Hamlin talks about the tests that were done. In the article he explains that "Three fully worked examples of the application of the procedure to prototype graphic designs are presented. The outcomes reveal that individual graphic designs can deliver massive relative impacts upon consumer evaluations and purchase intentions for the products to which they are applied, despite the fact that the designs were developed in good faith in response to the same design brief...... The results demonstrate that not only is it possible to measure the impact of holistic graphic design on consumer evaluation of food products, it is in fact essential to do so" (The Consumer Testing of Food Package Graphic Design, 2016). Hamlin then goes on to explain what method was used in these tests and explained how they worked. He explained that "An experimental design is used as it is essential to link the cause (graphic design) with the effect (consumer response to it) under controlled conditions" (The Consumer Testing of Food Package Graphic Design, 2016). If the reader was already skilled in this aspect of design and marketing, they would've already known this information. With that being said, this method can be very useful to anyone who is trying to learn how to successfully design and create product designs. Hamlin then explains the designs that are being used, showing figures, and explaining them to the audience. These explanations can be very helpful to those who need the advice and the expert help.

Structure

The overall structure on this paper was very helpful and very easy to read. The overall flow of this paper is what brings it all how together. The way he ties in all of his points into one after another really makes this a good read. He starts with his introduction and uses that to move into talking about the academic research of deigning. He then uses that section to tie in the next paragraph of applying the consumer research to "package design and development and delivery" (The Consumer Testing of Food Package Graphic Design, 2016). The way the article is written helps the reader easily transition into the next part of the reading and helps them easily retain the information that is being given by Hamlin.

Tying it all Together

This article was very clear and easy to understand. This would make a great resource for anyone who is trying to become a market designer. This article is very helpful, as Hamlin explains each part of it with clear and well-written examples. It is very easy to follow through and the information is very easy to retain. Upcoming designers should take a look at this article to learn the best ways to make product designs that'll gain attraction from consumers.
