Art 100 Santiago Canyon College- L. Southwell Museum Assignment: Select one museum from the list below. Your visit to a museum must be during this course, and must be from the list provided unless you clear it with me ahead of time. Your attendance must be current—this semester. After you have spent some time in the museum, carefully select a single work of art to study. This is particularly important if you visit the Bowers Museum. Assignment: 1. Do a drawing/sketch of the painting, sculpture or other artwork you have selected. The purpose of the drawing is to help you see, and to visually record how the work is structured. Your drawing needs to include observational notes. 2. Complete the worksheet with notes of what you observed. Attach it to your paper. A written analysis of the work you selected that must include: 1. Identify the work of art: (Title, artist, date, medium, and the Museum) at the top of your paper 2. Describe where it is located in the museum. How is it exhibited? Where is it placed? What works of art are next to it or around it? How does the display shape the way you experience seeing the work you have chosen? 3. Describe the work—its subject matter, (ie. if it is a painting, what is in the painting, what is it of or about?) 4. Why did you choose this piece? What, to you, is interesting, about the work? 5. Describe, discuss and write an analysis of the work in terms of its form and design. (color, texture, visual/structural elements, composition, etc.) 6. What does it ‘communicate’? How is its content linked to its form? 7. Find a work of art in the text that is similar or one that shows similar major cultural, stylistic and/or historical influences. Identify the specifics of the image in the text (page, plate number, title, artist, etc.) Describe specific and major ways that these works are similar, and identify, if relevant, ways they are different. You may include a passage from the text, but it MUST be properly cited. Example: “Cubism is (thus) a reconstruction of objects based on geometric abstraction” (Prebles 403) Length and format: 3 page paper, type/keyboard written, double-spaced, 11 or 12 point font. You can organize your paper by numbering your responses or composing sequential paragraphs. You need to address all of the above, with complete and organized written responses. (introductory or concluding paragraphs are not required.) Attach your drawing and observation notes, and your admission ticket. If admission was free, attach something that verifies you went to a museum during this semester. This paper needs to be in your words, and while you may need to research specifics of historical styles and cultures, the focus of the paper is your own discussion of what you see, think and feel from your own direct experience and observation . Your observations and analysis need to be clear. If any part of your paper is plagiarized, you will not receive credit for this assignment. This assignment is an opportunity for you to experience art in an art museum ( not a gallery ) where the setting is public and non-commercial . Museums to choose from : ( Most museums offer a discount for students, and some have free admission days.) L.A. County Museum of Art J. Paul Getty Museum in Malibu or The Getty Center (off the 405 fwy) The Huntington Library The Norton Simon Museum- free for students The San Diego Museum of Fine Art Bowers Museum (Please see the above requirements. Only limited works from this museum may be used for this assignment.) If you write about clothing, for example, you will not receive credit for this assignment.) Museum of Latin American Art (Long Beach) Check exhibits first. It can be limited. Laguna Art Museum (Only professional artists, NOT work from the schools) Hammer Museum at UCLA Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (If you wish to visit a different museum, you need to talk with me first)
