4 to 5 page Character Analysis Essay

Write an analysis of the chosen character from the Novella Siddartha.  Based on the textual “evidence” illustrating the character’s behaviors, actions, attitudes, values, and beliefs, as well as what others, including the narrator, say about the character, what is your assessment of this character?  How does this character fit the traditional archetypal concept and how does this character deviate from it?

Often, a conflict of perception can arise between one or more of these filters so that “true” character is not always clear at first. This conflict can make things really interesting! Prewriting Activity Choose a character from the novel Siddartha (Hesse). Using the mapping grid provided with this assignment, fill in the boxes with quotes from the text which reveal “character”; i.e., find examples of the character’s qualities, actions, conversations, and what the narrator and others say to and about the character. You will submit this mapping grid for 25 points prior to the conference draft. Next, think of the terms we often use to characterize people: Cruel, kind-hearted, helpful, selfish, giving, caring, outgoing, standoffish, etc., (the list is of adjectives is quite long!). What are the main adjectives that could describe this character. Remember, most of these adjectives are abstract concepts, so you need to provide textual evidence to illustrate and support your assessment . Also, think of the character in archetypal terms . Does the character fit the archetype of scapegoat, savior, outcast, hero , etc. Again, there are dozens of archetypes to choose from, and a character can fit more than one archetype. Also, each archetype can have both positive and negative manifestations. Be sure to explore all aspects of the archetype. Drafting After completing the mapping grid, you should have sufficient information gathered in front of you to write an analysis of the chosen character. Based on the textual “evidence” illustrating the character’s behaviors, actions, attitudes, values, and beliefs, as well as what others, including the narrator, say about the character, what is your assessment of this character? How does this character fit the traditional archetypal concept and how does this character deviate from it? Be particularly aware of the ironies at play in the text. Characters often reveal most about themselves in their dialogue. Sometimes what they say directly contradicts what they value, what they believe, and how they behave. Sometimes the dialogue and behavior is a cover for something else going on deep within the character----here is where particular attention to word choice and images created by the character can lend valuable clues. This type of analysis activity can be especially fun and challenging, as you, the reader, can play psychoanalyst, so to speak. Thesis As with the other essays in this course, the thesis for this analysis should be fairly complex. The way to achieve a complex thesis is to flesh out three to four character traits, then look at how these characteristics connect or contradict one another. Your close reading skills will assist you here! Formulate the focus of your analytical discussion around tensions, oppositions, ambiguities, ironies, and/or paradoxes between these characteristics. Also, exploring cause and effect relationships can lead to added complexity in the analysis, and by extension, the thesis.

The introduction invites reading. Thesis/Central Focus ______/15 The thesis is complex, well-developed, clearly stated, interesting and thought- provoking, analytical, and previews how the essay will be organized. Thesis clearly presents character qualities to be analyzed and archetypal connections to be explored. Body ______/20 Organization follows thesis preview and reflects a sense of purpose. Each paragraph links to and develops the thesis/central focus. The most powerful supporting material comes last. ______/20 Clear, effective transitions link idea to idea and paragraph to paragraph. ______/20 The essay is a substantial coherent response to the assignment, which contains specific references to the text, quotations, details, and images to support close reading assertions. The essay meets the minimum page requirement. Conclusion ______/15 The conclusion emphasizes major points of the analysis, points to wider implications, consequences, effects, and meanings, provides closure to the essay and does not introduce a new thesis or supporting point. The writing is concise, avoids wordiness and clichés; language is mature, persuasive, appropriate to topic and evokes images for the reader. Writer uses literary present tense throughout . ______/10 Sentences are easy to read and understand, flow smoothly, sound natural, and vary in length and phrasing. Sentences are not fragments, splices, or run-ons. Sentence structure does not impede reading. Basic Writing Conventions ______/15 Mechanics, citations, punctuation, and spelling are correct. ______/10 The essay is headed properly, originally titled, has a running header, does not fudge on margins or space, and follows the formatting guidelines established for this course.
